The multiple-entry policy implemented between Hengqin and Macao has significantly enhanced cross-border travel convenience, with over 66,000 travelers utilizing the policy within the first three months of its implementation. This initiative, which allows eligible travelers multiple entries and exits within the validity period of their permit, has not only boosted tourism but also fostered closer integration between the two regions.

Enhanced travel convenience and tourism growth

Since its implementation on January 1, 2025, the policy has seen a steady increase in usage, with the number of travelers rising by 87.5% from 16,000 in the first month to 30,000 in the third month. The policy has effectively reduced travel costs for frequent cross-border commuters, as noted by Zeng Xiang, Deputy Director of the Hengqin Border Inspection Station. "The daily average number of people passing through the Hengqin Port has increased by 25% compared to before the policy's implementation," Zeng said.

Cross-border educational integration

The policy has also greatly benefited cross-border educational activities. In the first quarter, Hengqin Boya Primary School organized its first cross-border study tour to Macao, with over 600 students participating. "Previously, single-entry permits made in-depth study tours difficult. Now, students can visit Macao's science and history museums at any time for more meaningful educational experiences," said Yang, a teacher from Boya Primary School.

Looking ahead, the Guangdong-Macao In-Depth Cooperation Zone in Hengqin plans to expand this cross-border study model to more schools, further promoting educational resource sharing between Hengqin and Macao.

Efficient border inspection measures

To handle the increased passenger flow, the Hengqin Border Inspection Station has implemented measures such as adding dedicated channels for multiple-entry travelers and upgrading smart inspection equipment. These improvements have reduced the average clearance time for travelers using the Cooperation Express channel to under 20 seconds.

"During holidays and study tour peaks, we  optimize police forces and open all inspection channels in advance to ensure safe and smooth passage for travelers," Zeng added.
