The world's first snow sled-specific helmet using key technologies from Dongguan city, was officially delivered to the Chinese national snow sled team recently.
Compared to the helmets currently used by the national team, this new helmet weighs 20% less, has a 9.7% lower drag coefficient, and provides significantly improved comfort for the athletes, offering professional support for their competitions.
The "R&D and Industrialization of Key Technologies for Snow Sled-Specific Helmets" project was led by Associate Professor Li Nan from Dongguan University of Technology, who coordinated a research team that collaborated with numerous research institutions and enterprises across Guangdong Province. The project aimed to address the pressing need for domestic production of high-end snow sled-specific equipment, and developed specialized cushioning materials for snow sled helmets, achieving localization of the core materials.
The snow sled helmets utilize 3D printing technology to replace traditional manufacturing processes, enabling rapid production. They are also paired with 3D scanning to create digital models of the users' heads, allowing for personalized custom-made sports helmets. After obtaining the user's head data, a 3D model is immediately designed and quickly produced. This manufacturing method greatly reduces the production cycle and lowers costs compared to traditional manufacturing, especially for small-batch customized production.
The high-density lattice structure effectively achieves shock absorption and ventilation.
Additionally, through customized 3D-printed composite structures, the helmets can perfectly fit the user's head, enhancing safety and comfort. The aerodynamic design and lightweight cushioning structure further improve the impact resistance performance, which has successfully passed bio-mechanical evaluation and application verification.

In June 2023, this project was recognized by the Guangdong Provincial Science and Technology Achievement Appraisal as being at the international leading and globally pioneering level. Among the achievements, the topological optimization and lightweight design of the helmet cushioning layer, as well as the application of SLS laser sintering technology in the manufacturing of the snow sled helmet cushioning layer, are considered groundbreaking in China.
