On June 20, the main structure of the Shenzhen-Zhongshan Link’s east artificial island was fully completed, marking a major milestone for the first undersea expressway interchange in China.
As a core project in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, Shenzhen-Zhongshan Link will cut the commuting time between the two cities from 2 hours to just 30 minutes.
Located on the south side of Shenzhen Bao’an International Airport, the east artificial island serves as the portal of the Shenzhen end of the Link, with the subsea tunnel of the Link to its west.
Being laid out as “one body and two wings”, the island is linked to both the subsea tunnel and multiple expressway networks. As the core transportation junction of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, it will open the way for passengers heading for Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Zhongshan, Huizhou, Zhuhai, Dongguan and other cities in different directions.
The east artificial island covers an area of 343,800 square meters, equaling the coverage of 48 international standard football fields. Infrastructures, including tunnel engineering facilities, rescue piers and power distribution rooms, were set up on the island.
The construction of the east artificial island started in 2017, and is expected to be completed in 2024.
At present, the building project of the Shenzhen-Zhongshan Link has entered the final stage, where the construction of the east artificial island will be focused on housing, electronics, pipe ditches and landscaping. The whole project is also scheduled to open to traffic in 2024.
